Some 50,000 foreign students study in Korea, and more than 90 percent of them are from Asia.
According to figures submitted to Grand National Party lawmaker Chung Doo-un by the Ministry of Education and Science Technology on Wednesday, 49,270 foreign students studied on four-year undergraduate courses and graduate schools in Korea as of April 1, 2007. The number has been steadily rising from 16,832 in 2004.
Students from China made up 68.3 percent with 33,650, and Japanese followed with 3,854 (7.8 percent). There were 2,242 Vietnamese students (4.6 percent), 1,388 students from the U.S. (2.8 percent), 1,309 Mongolians (2.7 percent), and 1,047 Taiwanese (2.1 percent). In total, 92.6 percent of students were from Asia.
Ewha Womans University had the greatest number of foreign students with 2,113, followed by Yonsei University with 1,898 and Kyunghee University with 1,491. Korea University was fourth with 1,358, and Seoul National University fifth with 1,347. Hanyang University and Cheongju University followed with 1,093 and 1,054.
