France¡¯s Chanel is the foreign brand most forged and distributed in Korea. According to statistics the Korean Intellectual Property Office submitted to Grand National Party lawmaker Lee Dal-gon, a member of the National Assembly's Knowledge Economy Committee, a total of 1,902 fake foreign goods were seized in the country during the first half this year, with fake Chanel goods accounting for the largest proportion with 324 cases or 17 percent. They were followed by Louis Vuitton (12.6 percent) Christian Dior (7 percent), Gucci (6.9 percent), and lesser-spotted French brand Agatha (5.8 percent).
Some 57.7 percent of the fake goods are accessories. Most fake accessories borrowed the Chanel brandname, while most bags were passed off as Louis Vuitton brands and most watches as Cartier.
The number of seized fake goods was on the increase -- from 3,038 cases in 2005 to 3,503 in 2007. The National Statistical Office predicts the number will reach 4,000 by the end of this year.
