Jeju Special Self-Governing Province says a record-breaking 1.9 million people visited the island's numerous beaches this summer.

The local government says, compared to last summer, 770,000 more beachgoers descended on the island's 10 major beaches, which usually open for business between late June and the end of August.

Jungmun Beach, located in southwest Jeju, was the most popular, with more than 570,000 vacationers, followed by Hamdeok and Pyoseon.

Tourism officials attribute the surge in visitors to lowered accommodation costs, a clampdown on overcharged services, and expanded amenities.
