Korea and Uruguay marked a new chapter in 44 years of diplomatic ties Monday, with the official visit of Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez.
In a summit at the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae, President Lee Myung-bak and the visiting South American leader discussed strengthening ties in trade and technology.
Two-way trade last year totaled US$112 million, with Korea importing fisheries products, wool, and copper from Uruguay and exporting plastics, electric equipment, cars, and textile machinery.
On Tuesday the two countries will sign agreements to further cooperate in the fisheries and forestry sectors, paving the way for information and personnel exchanges.
The fisheries deal should allow Korean deep-sea fishing vessels easier access to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and one of South America's most important ports.
Leaders also requested support for Korean companies looking to invest in and enter Uruguay's market, calling for closer cooperation on global issues at the United Nations.
