Improving Business English the Social Way
A non-profit, volunteer American group is working to provide Korean businesspeople with opportunities to learn English while socializing. The American Women¡¯s Club of Korea, whose members include the wife of the U.S. ambassador to Korea plus wives of American entrepreneurs working in Korea, said Thursday that it will launch an English study group dubbed Orange Community for Korean CEOs next month.

AWC has chapters in some 80 nations around the world; AWC Korea has 150 members.

Bev Sodan, the president of AWC Korea, said the group wants to make friends with Korean CEOs and hopes the community will also serve to improve their own knowledge of Korean language and culture.

Orange Community will provide one-on-one practical English lessons, where professional English consultants will personally visit a CEO to teach table manners, business etiquette, and negotiation and presentation skills. Lessons will be recorded to provide feedback via e-mail.

Other programs include ¡°Gala Cantata,¡± a weekly program teaching popular English-language songs, and ¡°Orange Night,¡± a monthly dinner event with AWC members. A Professional Business Assistance service will also be offered to companies experiencing cross-cultural language difficulties.
