The High Tech Crime Unit of the Seoul Central Prosecutors¡¯ Office on Thursday indicted two former employees of BOE-Hydis on charges of breach of trust.
Former BOE-Hydis CEO identified as Choi (59) and a former head of research and development identified as Lim (45) allegedly opened the company¡¯s computer server to the joint venture it established with a Chinese firm through merger and acquisition, exposing vastly more sensitive files than agreed in the original technology transfer deal.
This is the first case of leakage of technology to another country through a takeover that is going to court.
Hydis was the LCD division of Korean semiconductor firm Hynix until it was sold to China¡¯s BOE Group in 2002.
Choi and Lim are accused of a total of 4,331 counts of exposing technology for development of LCD panels to the Chinese joint venture. The court may be swayed by the fact that the leaked technology is now reportedly outdated and no longer used in Korea.
Prosecutors are investigating a similar case involving the acquisition of the Ssangyong Motor by China¡¯s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp.
