N.Korea Nuclear Verification a Must: U.S. Envoy
U.S. Ambassador to Korea Alexander Vershbow on Thursday reaffirmed the need for solid verification of North Korea¡¯s nuclear declaration. Speaking to reporters in the week North Korea announced it is halting the disablement process, Vershbow said, ¡°We need to be able to use well established verification techniques if we are to have confidence that the verification is accurate.¡± Some of the things North Korea provided, such as Russian aluminum tubes samples and thousands of documents ¡°raised as many questions as they answered,¡± he said.

Vershbow, who leaves office early next month, said that negotiations with North Korea are still going on behind the scenes. ¡°We are continuing to work on this. The talks have not broken off¡¦ I believe there is still a reasonable chance that we¡¯ll find a solution so that they can move forward.¡±

North Korea this week said it halted disablement of its nuclear facilities because the U.S. refused to strike it off a list of state sponsors of terrorism.
