Hanjin Group, the parent conglomerate of Korean Air, will invest massively in Uzbekistan to convert it into a hub for transporting goods and passengers in Central Asia. Hanjin on Wednesday said it decided to build airport infrastructure at Navoiy Airport in Uzbekistan jointly with Uzbek aviation authorities for the next 20 years. The project includes construction of a cargo terminal, modernization of passenger transport facilities, expansion of an oil refinery and oil depot, and construction of an aircraft maintenance center.
Hanjin is poised to turn Navoiy Airport into a Central Asian hub, which can handle 200,000 tons of cargo and one million passengers annually, by 2028. Hanjin will launch Korean Air's 747-400 cargo aircraft thrice weekly from Incheon to Navoiy, Uzbekistan to Milan, Italy, starting Wednesday. From Sept. 2, Korean Air will operate a 261-seater 777-200 carrier three times a week between Incheon and Tashkent.
