The government will invest W111.5 trillion (US$1=W1,084) in facilities, research and development, while increasing proportional use of new and renewable energies from 2 to 11 percent by 2030. The government will also build 10 new 1.4 million-kw-class nuclear power plants by 2030, increasing the percentage of nuclear power generation nationwide from 36 to 59 percent.
At a meeting chaired by President Lee Myung-bak at Cheong Wa Dae on Wednesday, the National Energy Committee fixed its first ¡°basic national energy plan (2008-2030)." This refers to a 20-year energy program, the first of its kind since the founding of the republic.
Of the new renewable energies, the government will increase the proportion of solar energy 44-fold, wind power 37-fold, bioenergy 19-fold, and geothermal energy 51-fold. In the sectors of wind power, tidal energy and bioenergy, the government will make it mandatory for energy providers to use a baseline percentage of new and renewable energies starting 2012.
Besides, the government will also inject W100 trillion into facilities and W11.5 trillion into research and development in the new and renewable energy sector.
