Electronic bracelets for round-the-clock monitoring and location tracking of sex offenders will be introduced starting Sept. 1. The Justice Ministry expects about 300 sex offenders to be tagged by the end of this year.
Prosecutors will demand during court proceedings that offenders who have abused children aged 13 or younger or repeat sex offenders wear electronic bracelets on their ankles. If the judge accepts the demand, offenders will be monitored around the clock for up to 10 years after their release from prison.
Monitoring of sex offenders started in Florida in 1997. Since then, the system has been introduced in about 10 countries, including the U.K., Australia, Spain, the Netherlands and Israel. In Korea, a law on tagging was enacted in April 2007.
