A list of 82 public boarding schools that will be renovated to provide high quality education in rural areas from 2010 was released Tuesday. After refurbishment, the public boarding schools will be able to accommodate up to 80 percent of students, staffed with the best teachers in the county, and will have greater freedom to design and run their curriculum. With all these benefits, they are expected to lure the best students across the country.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said recommendations from local education offices nationwide and field inspections by the ministry led to the selection of one public school per county as a public boarding school. The government plans to select an additional 68 schools, including private schools, next year to bring the number to about 150.
A certain percentage of students enrolled in public boarding school will be selected from the county, but admission will be open to students from other areas. Academic records in middle school and nationwide scholastic aptitude tests will be reflected in the admission process. Admission requirements and the number of students enrolling will be finalized and announced in the first half of next year.
Tuition including boarding fees will be set at around W2-2.5 million (US1$=W1,090) per year, but the government plans to have local governments fund all or part of tuition for children from low-income families.
