The most serious threat to the intellectual property of Korean businesses comes from China, especially in the electric and electronics fields, a poll suggests. The survey was conducted by Gallup Korea for the Korean Intellectual Property Office on the overseas intellectual property cases of 1,202 domestic firms. Some 65 percent of all cases happened in China, and 12 percent each in Taiwan and in the United States.
By sector, 24 percent of breaches happened in electrics and electronics, 22 percent in machinery and 21 percent in textile and clothing. Violations of industrial design were the most common complaint with 43 percent, followed by trademarks in second with 38 percent and patents and utility models with 32 percent of cases.
¡°While the number of intellectual property infringement cases of Korean products is decreasing in other countries, it is rising in China,¡± a KIPO official said. ¡°Companies need to take steps to prevent the violation of rights on their products, for example by applying for design patents in China the moment they launch a product in Korea.¡±
