This year the city of Seoul announced the "Design Korea Project" to seek close cooperation with the central government and various industries.

According to the Korea Institute of Design Promotion, an impressive product design can double sales, and Britain's renowned design journal Icon Magazine published an article stating that a good design can increase sales almost 20-fold.

An eye-catching design not only makes a product stand out but also enhances its brand value.

Samsung is pouring W100 billion (US$1=W1,055) a year into their Samsung Art and Design Institute, and LG Electronics currently employs 500 designers.

Korea produces 38,000 designers each year. That is a larger number than most industrialized countries who also have more people, such as the U.S., Japan and even the home of design, Italy.

Followed by the boom of designers recently, Seoul has been designated to be the World Design Capital of 2010 and will host the first-ever Design Olympiad this October.
