More universities will assess applicants on holistic merit to open up doors to students with great potential but lower quantified academic test scores. The system, already in place in 16 universities, will be expanded to more than 40 universities next year.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Education announced Wednesday they are giving the 40 universities a total of W15.8 billion (US$1=W1,049) to implement the selection system. Each university will get W140-900 million.
Instead of the conventional application process where students are selected primarily based on their College Scholastic Aptitude Test scores and academic records, the new system allows the universities to choose well-rounded students by assessing their potential and ability in different areas.
Admissions officers will look not only at the scholastic records but consider students¡¯ extracurricular activities, family and education background, their interests, hobbies and other elements. Experts say the expansion of the system means students have to rethink their strategies in preparing for college entrance.
