Daum has been slapped with surtaxes of W4 billion (US$1=W1,049). Korea¡¯s second largest internet portal operator announced Wednesday that the National Tax Service imposed the surtaxes for corporate tax it failed to pay from 2003 until 2007.
The tax authority finished on-site investigation on Aug.5, and the firm said it received the bill on Wednesday. ¡°We have no plans to file an objection and will pay the fines by the deadline, next Sunday,¡± a spokesman said.
The NTS started a regular tax probe of Daum in May. A separate investigation of the company¡¯s founder, Lee Jae-woong, reportedly continues. In addition to the surtaxes, the NTS is considering filing a complaint with the prosecution against some executives of the company for tax evasion.
