The Suwon District Prosecutors' Office on Wednesday sought an arrest warrant for Moon Kook-hyun, chairman of the Renewal of Korea Party, on charges of receiving W600 million for giving Lee Han-jung the no. 2 party list seat in the April general election (US$1=W1,049). It was the first time prosecutors sought an arrest warrant for an incumbent member of the current 18th National Assembly.
In March, a month before the general election, Moon allegedly received W600 million from Lee. Moon allegedly solicited financial help from Lee offering the no. 2 party list seat in return.
The National Assembly will have to agree to MoonĄ¯s arrest and the court grant the warrant for prosecutors to arrest him. Else prosecutors will indict him without subpoena and questioning.
In May, prosecutors arrested and indicted Lee for submitting falsified academic background and career records to the National Election Commission. In July, they also indicted Lee on charges of giving W600 million to Moon in return for the no. 2 seat. Another RKP official was also indicted in this regard.
