Web portals will be fined up to W30 million unless they remove articles from sites at the request of a defamation victim. The Korea Communications Commission on Wednesday said it will revise the Act on Promotion of Utilization of Information and Communication Network and Data Protection to that effect.
Under the revision, portals must take precautionary action by removing articles from sites if they are asked by victims to delete them, and are liable to a fine if they fail to do so.
Meanwhile, offenders will be sentenced to a prison term of up to a year and a fine of up to W10 million (US$1=W1,049) if they are caught fraudulently clicking on ad links to increase an advertiser's costs.
The commission will submit the revision to the National Assembly during its regular session in November after gathering public opinion online, holding public hearings, plus a review by the Ministry of Government Legislation and Cabinet approval.
