U.S. Government Set to Pass KOR-U.S. FTA in Congress
The Bush administration is working for congressional approval of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year.

Washington is cranking up efforts to push for ratification of the KOR-U.S. FTA following U.S. President George W. Bush's visit to Seoul earlier this month. The White House wants Congress to pass the trade pact before it adjourns on Sept. 26, echoing sentiments made by U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab after the FTA concluded in April last year.

The U.S. State Department says the Bush administration is planning to take action, with the Wall Street Journal publishing an article on Aug. 5 detailing President Bush's determination to "save the South Korean trade pact.Ħħ

But this week the Washington Post published an editorial entitled "Beyond Beef" saying prospects of ratification are much lower than expected, and that democratic leaders should put American workers and businesses first.

For the time being, however, there is no telling how the Bush administration will manage to persuade the Democrat-controlled Congress to act, especially with the U.S. presidential election drawing closer.
