Lawmakers are looking to secure educational rights for children of illegal immigrants by revising related laws. Currently no law guarantees the rights of these children to receive a formal education, allowing individual schools to reject their admission.
But Grand National Party lawmaker Kim Se-yeon says children have the right to receive an education regardless of their parents' legal status in accordance with a UN agreement ratified by Korea in 1991.
Officials say the revision of these laws may take time, as some fear that giving these rights to the children of illegal immigrants may be perceived as tacit consent for their illegal stay.
