More than seven out of 10 Japanese think Korea¡¯s Dokdo belongs to them, a poll by the Sankei Shimbun suggests. The poll by the Japanese daily published Tuesday saw 73.7 percent of respondents say Dokdo is Japanese territory, and 75 percent wanting their government to lay stronger claim to the Korean islets.
A mere 8.1 percent said, they did not think Dokdo should be Japanese, while 18.2 percent did not know.
The poll was conducted among 1,000 respondents after the U.S. Board on Geographic Names changed its entry for Dokdo back from ¡°undesignated¡± sovereignty to Korean after frantic Korean lobbying.
More than 80 percent of men in their 40s and 60 years and older, and of women in their 50s said Dokdo is Japanese, the daily said.
While the figures were not revealed, it seems far fewer young Japanese people believe Dokdo is Japanese -- one reason why Tokyo last month decided to give teaching guidelines for young students that insist the islets are Japanese.
