Consumers are seeking to launch a collective lawsuit against Internet portal Daum over the recent large scale personal information leak from its e-mail service. Industry officials say consumer watchdog Consumers Korea has completed their legal review of the suit and will begin gathering plaintiffs from Monday.
Since a system failure on July 22 exposed the email accounts of several hundred thousand users of Daum's Hanmail, the largest domestic email service, the civic group has estimated the damage scope based on previous cases. Consumers Korea has initially requested W500,000 (US$1=W1,015) per person in compensation. Plaintiffs who cannot prove concrete damage caused by the malfunction can request W100,000 for mental distress.
Daum itself estimates the data leak affected as many as 550,000 users. Meanwhile, the Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Information Security Agency have also looked into the case and are drafting a report. A commission official noted, "It takes time to analyze the abundant data. We'll reach an accurate decision on what caused the leak and who is to blame."
