Soaring oil prices are pushing people to leave their cars at home and crowd onto subways in Seoul. According to the Seoul Metro subway authority on Thursday, the number of daily commuters using subways has increased this year by more than 63,000 or almost 3 percent over last year.
To accommodate the increased number of commuters, Seoul Metro is running five additional trains on lines one through four during rush hours from 7 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Also, to prevent any accidents that could occur during rush hours the subway authority has since June been placing guards on platforms to stop people from forcibly trying to get on over-loaded trains.
