Big Cell Phone Makers Compete for Supremacy
The cell phone market is one of the world's toughest and most lucrative industries, accounting for billions of units in sales across the globe. New figures show that Motorola is trailing far behind the leaders, whereas on the opposite end of the spectrum Nokia continues to record stellar sales. The two other market leaders include Korea's Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

Sales data for the first and second quarters of the year show that Nokia posted a surge in sales to reach 122 million units worldwide. The runner-up was Samsung with estimated sales of 48 million units during the three months starting from April. Coming in third was LG at 28 million.

Meanwhile, showing a lackluster performance were Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Sources say the joint business of Japan's Sony and Sweden's Ericsson marked an operational deficit of US$3 million in the year's second quarter due mainly to the economic downturn in Europe and the U.S. This is in sharp contrast to industry leader Nokia which thrived in the emerging markets of China, India and Africa.

Industry insiders say Samsung and LG are likely to maintain their second and third place positions. In spite of global economic sluggishness, insiders made special note of the outstanding sales for LG, which overtook Sony Ericsson for the fourth spot in the first three months of the year.
