North Korea committed a total of 6,738 human rights violations in 2007, of which 901 were public executions, according to the North Korean Human Rights Infringement Record Center. The center, affiliated with the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights, on Tuesday published its white paper on human rights in North Korea for the year.
The center says it collected data based on interviews with 818 North Korean refugees, surveys, 154 books written by North Korean refugees and visitors to the North, six weeklies, 17 monthlies, 15 academic journals, and newspaper articles.
It also confirmed that there were at least 20 more executions, and these were not carried out publicly. There were 56 cases of summary executions without judicial process as well.
The center adds since the report is a compilation based on limited information, it cannot rule out that some cases are counted more than once. ¡°But the white paper is significant in that it is based on multifaceted and systematic surveys aimed at improving the human rights situation in North Korea,¡± it adds.
