Hyundai Motor's Avante semi-mid-sized car has become the second Korean car with cumulative sales of over 5 million vehicles. Cumulative sales of the Avante at home and abroad reached 5,001,109 vehicles last Wednesday, two years and three months after passing the 4 million mark in March 2006, the carmaker said Tuesday. In 2001 the Hyundai Accent became the first Korean finished car to reach 5 million in sales.

Since the Avante's predecessor Elantra (948,348 units sold) was introduced in 1990, the vehicle line -- Avante (introduced in 1995, 1.2 million sold), Avante XD (2000, 2.2 million), and Avante HD (2006, 593,915) -- has been a continual bestseller. If every Avante sold to date was placed bumper to bumper, the line would reach from Seoul to Busan (428 km) and back 26 times.
The Avante was first exported as the Elantra in February 1991, selling over 3 million vehicles overseas so far as the carmaker's staple export.
