Those hesitant about taking extravagant trips overseas might be in the minority because many people are heading out of Korea this summer. This is despite rising oil prices which have pushed up airfares for domestic airlines especially for long distance routes.
Korea's leading air carriers Korean Air and Asiana Airlines say they were surprised to see another fully booked season equal to last year. According to Asiana, bookings for overseas flights increased by over 1 percent compared to last year when their reservation rate was at more than 78 percent.
Most travelers are expected to head out starting next week for the month-long holiday period. For Asiana international flights to Hong Kong are the most popular with almost 98 percent of their seats fully booked. Other destinations with an over 95 percent booking rate are New York, London, Narita and Sydney.
Korean Air says overall reservations for their overseas flights range from 72 to 99 percent with Hong Kong as the most popular destination. Airline officials attribute the boom in overseas travel to young Korean students taking advantage of their summer break to study English abroad.
Another factor experts say is that Koreans are still choosing to spend their holidays at overseas resorts. Korean Air and Asiana plan to add more flights to their overseas routes that are high in demand.
