The Korea Communications Standards Commission has ordered MBC to apologize to viewers for distortions in the current affairs program ¡°PD Diary¡± on the safety of American beef aired on April 29 and May 13. An apology to viewers is the most serious punishment the commission is empowered to mete out.
The KOCSC in a meeting Wednesday ruled that the two programs evinced serious flaws in terms of neutrality and objectivity, with at least six mistranslations. ¡°The fact that 'PD Diary' mistranslated an English interview to mislead the viewers, and the fact that they only aired the opinion of a certain group -- the U.S. Consumers Union -- on the cattle slaughter system in the United States while there were clearly other views available compromised the neutrality and objectivity of the program,¡± the KOCSC said.
It concluded that MBC also violated article 17 of broadcasting standard regulations by not correcting the errors immediately after the mistranslation was pointed out. The punishment requires the broadcasting company to make an announcement to viewers that the program was flawed. MBC is likely to appeal.
