Retailer Sees Wide Differences in Meat Sales
Sales of beef, pork and chicken are taking divergent paths. Hanwoo (domestic beef) sales have continued to fall on the anti-U.S. beef protests, pork sales are climbing steadily and chicken sales are recovering from the bird flu scare.

Korea's leading hypermarket chain Shinsegae says sales of hanwoo are down 14 percent this month as of Sunday. Year-on-year monthly sales growth of hanwoo have fallen since posting 9 percent in April to minus 6 percent in May and minus 11 percent in June. The falling sales have triggered price cuts. At Shinsegae E-Mart, top-grade hanwoo sirloin has dropped to W6,250 per 100g from W6,550 in March.

Meanwhile pork sales are rising steadily. Sales at E-Mart grew 10 percent year-on-year in April, 43 percent in May, 28 percent in June and 46 percent this month. The rising demand has also raised the price of samgyeobsal (fresh bacon) from W1,590 per 100g in March to W2,140. Chicken sales are also recovering as the latest avian influenza fright fades. At E-Mart, chicken sales which have been weak since April grew 17 percent in the first half of July.
