Those who would only ever consider men's suits in navy blue and gray may be tempted to try something different this summer. White jackets, which you may have avoided for a host of reasons, are very in this season. Luxury menswear brands including Ralph Lauren and Hermes have featured a white-based marine and cruise look in their latest collections. And now they are brightening Korea as well.

Roh So-young at the Samsung Fashion Institute says a white jacket is great for either a cheerful business look or a casual resort look. Among the various whites from bright white to ivory, the most versatile is the bright ivory linen jacket.

Director Moon Kyung-ah at Maestro says, "A very bright white can highlight yellowish Asian skin color, so a yellowy ivory jacket looks best on Asians to match with any pants and shirt."

¡ß Tight fit

The key is size. White is an expanding color, so wear a perfectly fitting jacket and shirt. Pants without creases make for a slimmer figure. For a casual look, jeans are also good. Moon's advice, "A bright colored shirt goes with bright jeans, and black or gray shirts with dark jeans."

¡ß Saving energy

A casual white jacket is also forgiving of crumples which is why linen jackets are on the up. Chung Hee-jin, the design chief at Galaxy, says the casual white jacket goes hand in hand with the no-tie fashion, for which a campaign is underway aimed at energy conservation. mVIO design chief Min Jung-ho says white jackets go well with both primary and pastel colors but advises against flashy patterns and colors for both the upper wear and pants as they may look like a nightclub costume.

¡ß Fighting dirt and wrinkles

Many men avoid white because of stains. Dirt must be rinsed off immediately with a moist handkerchief. Natural bathroom steam is better than ironing. "Turn on hot water in the bathroom for the steam to fill up and then hang a wrinkled jacket in it," says Moon.
