The personal details and photos of sex offenders convicted of preying on children and adolescents will be released for the first time on Tuesday. So far, the government only released their addresses and description of their offenses on the homepage of the now-defunct Government Youth Commission for six months, and on the homepages of local administrative offices for one month.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs on Monday said according to the newly amended Juvenile Sex Protection Act, the personal information of sex offenders including their picture, occupation and address will be listed on an electronic database which will be accessible by parents and educators at police stations.
The data of five of the eight sex offenders convicted after the Juvenile Sex Protection Act was amended in February were put on the database on Tuesday. But two of them are still in prison and the information will become public only when they are released, leaving three whose picture, age, occupation, and complete work and home addresses will be immediately accessible. A detailed description of their crimes will be included as well. But the information is only accessible from a computer terminal in police stations in the areas where the sex offenders reside, and printing out or copying it is not permitted.
An official at the ministry said the government is working on developing a system to make the information accessible online.
