Samsung Group to Overhaul Display Business
Samsung Group is planning to overhaul the display business of its affiliates Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI. The affiliates announced Monday that Samsung Electronics will take over SDI's plasma display panel business. Under the plan, SDI will continue producing PDPs while Samsung Electronics oversees sales and marketing.

The group's display business was divided between Samsung Electronics in charge of LCDs and SDI charged with PDPs. But with PDP TV sales lagging far behind those of LCD TVs, SDI's PDP business has been running a deficit for years. A Samsung official says Samsung Electronics will consolidate PDP marketing and sales to cut redundancies and maximize synergies through its global distribution network.

The two affiliates also seek to set up separate corporations to prevent overlapping investments and raise competitiveness in the next-generation display panel, AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode). The display business will likely be managed by Samsung Electronics while SDI focuses on rechargeable batteries, including developing batteries for hybrid cars.
