Korean Gov't Rated Poorly in World Bank Survey
Korea ranks last place among the 34 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development member states in six categories of governance, according to the World Bank's "Worldwide Governance Indicators 2007" report released on Wednesday.

On a 100-point scale based on data from last year, Korea scored 67 in voice and accountability, 62 in political stability and absence of violence, 86 in government effectiveness, 79 in regulatory quality, 75 in rule of law and 68 in control of corruption.

The scores are an improvement from Korea's 2006 performance, but the lowest, along with Mexico, among the OECD members this year. The OECD average for each category was 91.4, 81.4, 88.7, 91.1, 90.3 and 90.5 points.

Topping the list was Finland, scoring 98, 99, 97, 96, 97 and 100 points respectively. Japan's scores were 75, 85, 89, 83, 90 and 85 points, far higher than Korea's. North Korea was dead last among the total 212 countries surveyed, with scores of 0, 57, 0, 0, 15 and 0 points.
