International airfares will rise by W10,000 to W46,000 one-way from next month due to soaring oil prices (US$1=W1,029). If purchased this month, the tickets for flights leaving in July and August will not be affected as the fuel surcharge is calculated on the day of purchase.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs decided to expand the scale of the fuel surcharge from 16 levels to 33. Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will apply Level 21 for tickets purchased from July. As a result, the fuel surcharge on long-distance flights to the Americas, Australia, and Europe will go up by W46,000 for one-way, up from US$140 to $185. Therefore, for a round trip ticket, over W380,000 goes on the fuel surcharge.

The aviation industry announced that the fuel surcharge system will be introduced for domestic flights from July, prompting an increase in airfares of about 20 percent. A one-way ticket from Gimpo to Jeju will jump from W88,400 to W103,800, and between Gimpo and Busan from W75,900 to W91,300. The airliners have so far not imposed a fuel surcharge due to concerns for inflation and the burden on consumers.
