Health authorities have lifted bird flu warnings from Gangwon Province as there have been no new reports of the virus among poultry there following cases back in May.
Just over a month ago, on May 4, avian influenza broke out in Chuncheon, a small city in northeastern Korea. After quarantine officials declared that bird flu had come to Gangwon Province, 60 quarantine control centers were set up across the area in just a day.
And now, as of this week, the warning has been lifted on the region and the control centers have been shut down as signs of bird flu in poultry disappeared.
Chuncheon, known for its spicy fried chicken dish, saw the number of visitors it had fall sharply due to the bird flu scare. Normally, visitors come from outside the city and country and now they are coming back.
Relieved farmers are working to recover from the month-long halt in business. The spread of the deadly flu resulted in the slaughtering of thousands of birds after it was found in various regions nationwide.
