The prices of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas, which have been relatively stable amidst soaring oil prices, are expected to rise. That will have a big impact on ordinary people¡¯s living conditions as propane is mainly used for heating and cooking and butane as fuel for taxis.
LPG importers and suppliers such as E1 and SK Gas plan to raise the price from next month. An E1 staffer said, ¡°Although we have tried our best to avoid it, the raise is inevitable as the price of propane in the global market continues to rise.¡±
The average price of LPG in Korea last week was W1,676 (US$1=W1,037) for 1 kg of propane gas, and W946 for 1 l of butane gas. From June, the price of LPG is likely to go up by W100, and the butane price is expected to surpass W1,000. When gas importers increase the price, oil refineries like GS-Caltex Corporation and S-Oil Corporation, who obtain LPG by refining crude oil, will naturally raise the price as well. The price of LNG, supplied by city gasworks, is likely to go up too.
