Seafood Consumption Up Amid Mad Cow, Bird Flu Fears
In addition to concerns regarding U.S. beef, bird flu is spreading in the country and this has Korean consumers choosing seafood over poultry and beef. This has naturally led to a huge boost for the fisheries industry.

Discount retailer Megamart says seafood sales so far this month have jumped 40 percent compared to the same period last month.

Megamart saw sales of mackerel rise 55 percent over last year, while sales of squid grew 20 percent, and shrimp sales rose 70 percent. Plus packaged seafood sales doubled from last month.

A buyer for the discount store said another reason for seafood's popularity is that despite difficulty keeping seafood in stock their prices have not gone up.
