From Lee Cheerleader to Beef Protestor: Kim Jang-hoon
The singer Kim Jang-hoon performed at the inauguration of President Lee Myung-bak in February, but on Saturday he was singing for beef protestors also demanding Lee¡¯s impeachment and holding banners saying ¡°Lee Myung-bak Out!¡± Kim came onstage at 10:10 p.m. at a candlelight vigil against the import of U.S. beef in Cheonggye Plaza, downtown Seoul. ¡°I¡¯m pleased to see a beautiful event running smoothly,¡± he said. ¡°Since I¡¯m a singer, I¡¯m going to express how I feel through my songs.¡± In a message on his personal blog the previous day, Kim explained his decision to take part. ¡°I tried to quell my anger, but I can¡¯t stay calm anymore as I watch how the situation unfolds. I plan to go to Cheonggye Plaza tomorrow,¡± he wrote.

There are dissenting views on Kim¡¯s change of heart. A 30-year-old salary man named Goh said he sees no problem in Kim performing at the protest as singers have right to sing whenever and whatever they want to sing. ¡°His current opinion on the president may well be different from what he thought three months ago,¡± he said. But a 20-year-old student at Sogang University who identified herself as Lee, says, ¡°Kim reminds me of many celebrities, who loudly endorsed the president but later withdrew their support and made excuses for their backing when his approval rating went down.¡±
