Korea Falls 2 Notches in World GNI Ranking

National Income Plunges to Lowest Since IMF Crisis
Soaring Prices Send GNI Tumbling
Per-Capita GNI Likely to Drop Below $20,000 This Year
South Korea ranked 51st in the world in per capita gross national income (GNI) according to 2006 data, down two notches from 49th in 2005.

GNI refers to the total value of a country's production, plus income receipts in foreign countries and less overseas payments.

According to the Bank of Korea on Sunday, citing a World Bank report titled "World Development Indicators 2007," South Korea's per capita GNI stood at US$17,690 in 2006, ranking 51st among 209 countries surveyed.

Luxembourg topped the list with per capita GNI of $71,240. Japan ranked 19th with $38,630.

South Korea ranked 13th among 185 surveyed nations in nominal GDP, trailing Russia. The U.S. ranked number one in GDP, followed by Japan, Germany, China and Britain.
