Korean Firms Shell Out for Earthquake Victims
Korean conglomerates are supporting relief and recovery efforts in China¡¯s Sichuan Province, where a powerful earthquake has killed at least 19,500 people. The Samsung Group said Thursday its Chinese subsidiary is donating 30 million yuan for a quick recovery of the region. The LG Group and the SK Group said they decided to send 17 million and 10 million yuan each through China¡¯s Red Cross. Executives and staff of the SK Group working in China donated an additional 200,000 yuan.

The Kumho Asiana Group donated funds of US$200,000 to the Chinese Embassy in Korea. Asiana Airlines, the Kumho Asiana subsidiary which operates four direct flights a week between Incheon and Sichuan¡¯s capital Chengdu, decided to provide in-kind assistance as well; the relief goods were shipped to the devastated region by its 8 p.m. flight bound for Chengdu on Thursday.

The Hyundai Automotive Group made a donation of 10 million yuan on Wednesday to the Red Cross and is providing 11 SUVs to be used in relief and recovery efforts for free. POSCO made a donation of 1 million yuan to China¡¯s Commerce Ministry.
