Two cases of bird flu in North and South Gyeongsang Province were on Wednesday confirmed to have been of the deadly H5N1 strain that can spread to humans. That brings the number of highly pathogenic avian flu cases in Korea to 42 since it first broke out in Gimje, North Jeolla Province on April 1.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said investigation revealed that chickens in Gyeongsan and Yangsan died of the H5N1 strain and ordered the cull of 994,000 poultry within 3 km of the farm.
Meanwhile, another case of the deadly strain is suspected after the death of chickens in Gangneung, Gangwon Province. In two farms in Gangneung, six chickens aged 40 weeks were reported dead. The result of the preliminary investigation showed three of them had bird flu.
