Korean builders have won contracts totaling US$6.3 billion to build an oil refinery in Kuwait.
According to the construction industry on Monday, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company awarded individual and consortium contracts to GS Engineering & Construction, SK Engineering & Construction, Daelim Industrial Co. and Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
The contracts are part of a project to build a large refinery with a daily production capacity of 615,000 barrels at Al-Zour on the Persian Gulf. The project lured 10 bidders from around the world, and contracts were divided into five packages.
GS Engineering & Construction formed a consortium with Japan's JGC to win a $4 billion deal to build a distillation and desulfurization facility. GS' stake is worth $2 billion.
SK Engineering & Construction won a $2.6 billion order to build a refinery process facility while Daelim Industrial Co. will sign a $1.18 billion deal to build storage tanks. A $1.12 billion contract to build wharf facilities went to Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
Of the entire $8.3 billion Al-Zour refinery project, the Korean builders won contracts totaling $6.3 billion. Construction will begin as early as this month and is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2012.
