Korea has signed a deal with Uzbekistan to buy 2,600 tons of uranium over a span of seven years starting in 2010.
The deal was struck after a meeting Monday between Korea's Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and his Uzbeki counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoev.
The prime minister's office says the amount equals roughly 9 percent of Korea's annual uranium consumption for non-military purposes, which is around 4,000 tons.
Separately the two countries also signed a contract to jointly explore and develop oil and gas fields in the resource-rich Central Asian country. In return, Korea will provide economic aid and assist in building medical and residential facilities.
