U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, who arrived in Korea on Wednesday as a part of an East Asia trip, plans to deliver the U.S. government¡¯s position regarding fears about renewed imports of American beef on Thursday. He is to reiterate that U.S. beef imported to Korea will be the same as the beef consumed in the U.S. market, and that there has been no case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy reported since animal feed was banned in 1997. He will also stress that Korea and the U.S. hid nothing from Korean citizens during the negotiation process.
In an interview on arrival at Incheon International Airport, Negroponte said, "I guess I would say my view is that American beef is an excellent product. It's very safe." He said there has been no problem with U.S. beef exported to other countries so far, and that he hopes the Korean government and people carry out discussions "on scientific facts and not on imagined problems."
