Paul Potts, the British opera singer who rose to stardom after winning the reality show ¡°Britain¡¯s Got Talent¡± last year, arrived in Korea on Thursday to meet his fans and give recitals.
In a press conference, Potts promised to donate 10 percent of the proceeds to help treat North Korean children suffering from tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is 100 percent preventable, and when treated properly, a complete cure is possible. He said he particularly wanted to help a small country like North Korea because it is easily overlooked, adding he wants to let children in North Korea know that they are not forgotten, and that helping hands will always find them. People¡¯s Enterprise, who planned and arranged Potts¡¯ concerts in Korea, decided to donate W15 million (US$1 = W1,003) to the cause.
Potts rose to fame overnight when he was discovered in the TV talent show in June last year. A mobile phone salesman at the time, Potts blew everyone away with ¡°Nessum Dorma¡± from Puccini¡¯s opera Turandot. His eventual win in the show led him to release his debut album ¡°One Chance,¡± which later topped the U.K. charts; more than 3 million copies were sold across the globe. He is giving four concerts in Korea, three at the Welch-Ryang Auditorium in Ewha Womans University from May 3 to 5, and one at the KBS Hall in Busan on May 7.
