Headrest Safety in Leading SUVs Rated Unsatisfacory
The headrest installed in four out of seven domestic SUVs has been rated unsatisfactory in a safety test, due to insufficient protection of the neck of the driver and passengers.

The Korea Insurance Development Institute on Tuesday said it tested the safety level of seven leading SUVs in the Korean market, and Hyundai¡¯s Tucson, Kia¡¯s Sportage, and Ssangyong¡¯s Kyron and Actyon scored the lowest of four categories on the grading scale. Hyundai¡¯s Santafe deluxe model and Kia¡¯s Sorrento deluxe model received the highest score possible. GM Daewoo¡¯s Winstorm was given the second best grade.

An official at KIDI said while the models that had an active head restraint were favorably evaluated, the cars that had a normal headrest received poor marks. When a car is struck from the back, an active head restraint automatically readjust the position of the headrest to keep it close to the passenger¡¯s head and absorb the shock. It is about 50 percent more expensive than a normal headrest and is optional.
