The shipbuilding industry is to start recruiting welding technicians from overseas as it cannot find them in Korea. The ministries of knowledge economy and justice said Tuesday they decided to accept a request from the shipbuilding industry and will apply the ¡°gold card¡± system for the industry in this month.
The gold card system allows companies to recruit experts from abroad -- in the case of welders notably Southeast Asia. The gold card system was designed mainly for the convenience of people working in high technology fields who are invited to work in companies, research institutes and universities. But as welding technicians are in urgent demand, the government decided to expand the range of beneficiaries.
Welders with five years or more of experience who have a certificate issued by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) are eligible to apply, an official at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said. Any one country can send up to 25 percent of the total number of positions available for foreign welders. The Korea Industrial Technology Foundation, which reviewed the validity of the industry¡¯s request, said about 200 foreign welders will be admitted to work in Korea, although the shipbuilding industry has requested more.
