The government has introduced a new system under which local experts are hired to help Korean embassies overseas with energy and resource diplomacy matters.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Korean Embassy in Kazakhstan appointed Raushan Bayetova, a 40-year-old expert on petroleum and gas energy, as a special energy and resources consultant to the ambassador on Thursday.
Up until now, locals were employed in Korean embassies mostly as administrative assistants. The Foreign Ministry said Bayetova will assist the ambassador in collecting information on energy resources and building a human network in Kazakhstan.
The Korean Embassy in the Republic of the Congo has decided to employ a Congolese energy expert lawyer and is currently doing the paperwork necessary for the hire.
An official at the Foreign Ministry said 24 embassies in energy-abundant countries in Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are focusing on energy diplomacy, and they are currently looking for local experts.
The move reflects President Lee Myung-bak's policy of pragmatic diplomacy. Lee has publicly stated several times that he would hire capable foreigners or ethnic Koreans who can help maximize national interests in any sector.
