The Korean Teachers and Education Workers' Union has issued a statement saying the government is placing undue pressure on students.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has been giving schools greater operational leeway compared to the previous Roh Moo-hyun administration. One of the results has been the division of students into classes according to academic levels.
Proponents of the new policy say it encourages constructive competition by allowing students to choose classes and reach higher levels. But the union says it is turning schools into battlefields geared only toward university admissions.
