The suspicious death of a Chinese actress and model has shocked both South Korea and China. Tan Jing, 24, was found dead at an apartment building in Guangzhou, China earlier this month. Local police initially believed she was a sex worker. The death has caused a stir among South Korean and Chinese netizens as staff of a South Korean airline were reportedly in the apartment when Tan died and police are uncertain of the exact nature of how she died.

Police received a report at 3 a.m. on April 5 from the apartment building's janitor and a neighbor in an opposite building that a bleeding, half-naked woman was hanging from a railing between the 12th and 13th floors of the apartment building in Dongfeng Plaza. She was said to be wearing a bra and pink shorts and her hair had been let down. Police and firefighters recovered the body with a rope.

After an initial investigation, police believed that Tan had been pushed by three men from the bathroom window of a 30th floor apartment, which had been rented by a South Korean. Some reports cited a neighbor as saying that he had heard an argument at around 3 a.m. between people speaking English and Korean, in which a woman shouted, "How can three people pay one combined fee?" A security guard at the apartment building also told police that three foreign men and a young woman, all drunk, entered the building early in the morning.

But a doctor who examined the body said that Tan was not a prostitute and there were no signs that she had been raped. He noted that her blood alcohol level was three times the acceptable level, and her body had received multiple fractures in the fall, leading police to believe her death was a suicide or an accident. Local newspapers are still raising suspicions, saying that three South Korean men who work for an airline were with her before she died and have since fled to Mexico via South Korea.

Tan Jing worked as a model for large Chinese companies such as China Mobile. She also appeared in a South Korean commercial for a rice cooker company and a music video for the title song of singer Kim Jong-kook's third album, generating a fan base in South Korea.
