A case of bird flu at a chicken farm in Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province, has been confirmed to have been caused by the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. As a result, the number of H5N1 flu cases has increased to 10 in the Jeolla provinces.
Quarantine authorities are conducting tests of 18 assumed bird flu cases to find whether they are of the strain, which can affect humans. The targets include six farms in Gimje, North Jeolla Province, and in South Jeolla Province, which are more than 10 km from the initially infected farms.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that since the bird flu case at the Yeongam chicken farm was confirmed to be highly pathogenic, it culled 310,000 chickens at 13 chicken farms within 3 km of the initially infected farm. The spread of bird flu will reach its peak in the middle of this week, when the results of ongoing tests will come out, a ministry official said.
